Spearmint

Hormone balance

8 min brewMid-afternoon as a calming, non-caffeinated pick-me-up

What it does

Anti-inflammatory with documented effects on hormone balance, particularly for women.

What the research says

Spearmint has demonstrated anti-androgenic effects in two randomized controlled trials — reducing excess androgen levels. This is particularly relevant for women with PCOS or hormonal bloating. It's also anti-inflammatory and gentler than peppermint (no menthol, lower risk of reflux). Honest assessment: good quality evidence for hormonal effects, moderate for general anti-inflammatory use.

How to brew

Ingredients

  • ·1 handful fresh spearmint leaves (or 1 tsp dried)
  • ·300ml water

Steps

  1. 1

Gently tear or bruise the spearmint leaves to release the oils.

  2. 2

Place in a cup or infuser.

  3. 3

Pour water at 90°C over the leaves.

  4. 4

    Steep for 6–8 minutes.

  5. 5

Strain and enjoy. Spearmint is naturally sweet — no sweetener needed.

Best time to drink

Mid-afternoon as a calming, non-caffeinated pick-me-up.
